Reading the news of Roe v Wade in the US is maddening. HOW did a landmark woman’s health right be overturned?. This isn’t an issue for us in the U.K, but there is still glaring inequalities with female healthcare in the U.K.
For example:
- Misdiagnosis of reproductive healthcare issues such as endometriosis as “general period pains”, which points to an issue of being more likely to NOT being taking seriously with symptoms than men.
- Under-representation in clinical trials affecting efficacy of treatments specifically for women/girls.
- Women experiencing menopause having issues with obtaining affordable Hormone Replacement Pills with the NHS. Dips in female hormones increases risk of serious illnesses such as heart disease, osteoporosis , depression etc.
- Women/girls who are ethnic minorities deal with barriers in NHS settings such as inadequate translation and data collection resources , less likely to be referred to external NHS settings such as Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IATP)
